Meeting the Governor
I usually limit myself to the "Compact Life" however there are times when other firearms catch my eye. Two weeks ago, while at the range I got my first crack at the new Smith and Wesson Governor. I know,I know, it is not a compact or pocket firearm but the Governor peaked my interest.

Prior to the Governor, I researched the Taurus Judge which is similar to the Governor. I held the Judge but never got the opportunity to put a couple of rounds down range, like I did with the Governor. I was lucky enough to put several rounds down range with three calibers, 410, 45colt and 45acp.
The Governor is a surprisingly light for a firearm of its size and because of this the recoil can be difficult to handle. I shot the 410 federal cartridge and it was fun to shoot although the recoil was a bit much for consistent shooting. The cowboy round, 45colt was a pleasure to shoot with manageable recoil but a fair kick. The 45acp has to be shot with moon clips which Smith and Wesson provides with the Governor. The 45acp shoots well and it was interesting to shoot 45acp through a revolver.
For the record, I know the concerns regarding using the Governor or Judge as a self defense firearm. In my opinion, improvements in the 410 rounds and the ability to shoot a mixture of six rounds improves the self defense profile. While Voices of Defense does not endorse one particular the Smith and Wesson Governor is a fun gun, interesting shoot and just might join my collection.
